In 2025, the city of Samarkand — one of the most ancient and culturally rich centers along the historic Silk Road — will host the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. This landmark decision was officially adopted during the 42nd session held in Paris in November 2023.

The event marks a historic milestone not only for Uzbekistan but for the entire Central Asian region. It will be the first time in nearly four decades that UNESCO's highest decision-making body convenes outside of its headquarters in Paris — a distinction last seen in 1985.

The selection of Samarkand reflects the international recognition of Uzbekistan’s increasing role in promoting intercultural dialogue, preserving tangible and intangible heritage, and advancing the global sustainable development agenda.

The General Conference is held every two years and brings together representatives from all 194 UNESCO Member States, along with observers, international organizations, academics, cultural figures, and civil society. It sets the strategic direction for UNESCO’s programs in education, science, culture, and communication, and adopts its biennial budget and policy framework.

Hosting the session in Samarkand will provide a unique opportunity to present Uzbekistan’s rich historical and cultural legacy to the global community. High-level meetings, thematic discussions, cultural showcases, and exhibitions will be held at the state-of-the-art Congress Center of the Silk Road Samarkand complex — one of the region’s largest and most advanced venues.

Preparations for the event are being carried out in accordance with a Presidential decree, under the supervision of a national Organizing Committee led by the Prime Minister.

A comprehensive communication and outreach campaign is being developed, along with the publication of commemorative materials, cultural programs, exhibitions, media tours, and educational initiatives that reflect Uzbekistan’s diversity, openness, and cultural diplomacy. The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand will be a truly landmark event, affirming Uzbekistan’s position as a hub of cultural dialogue, a committed partner in global cooperation, and an active contributor to shaping the international humanitarian agenda of the future.
