A solemn ceremony was held in Bukhara to mark the opening of the first International Biennial of Contemporary Art, “Recipes for Broken Hearts.”

The event brought together representatives of cultural and diplomatic circles, artists, curators and guests from different countries. Among the speakers at the ceremony were Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan, as well as Biennial Commissioner Gayane Umerova, Curator Diana Campbell and Architectural Programme Artistic Director Wael Al Awar. In their remarks, they highlighted Bukhara’s importance as a unique space for dialogue between art and history.

The project of the Art and Culture Development Foundation has become part of the wider programme for the revitalisation of Bukhara’s Old City and reflects the country’s strategic course towards preserving heritage and reinterpreting it in a contemporary context.
