On 6 November in Samarkand, the laureates of the UNESCO–Uzbekistan Beruniy International Prize in the field of Artificial Intelligence Ethics Research were announced.
Established in 2023 at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Prize aims to support research that promotes ethical, inclusive, and human-centred approaches to artificial intelligence. The inaugural laureates include Professor Virgilio Augusto Fernandes de Almeida (Brazil), Professors Susan Perry and Claudia Roda (France), as well as Professors Lan Xue, Zheng Liang, and Qian Xiao from the Institute of International AI Governance at Tsinghua University (China).
The award ceremony took place within the framework of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. A special issue of The UNESCO Courier, in English and Uzbek, was also published to mark the occasion, celebrating the scientific legacy of the eminent scholar Abu Rayhan Beruniy, and will become part of UNESCO’s digital library.
