From 12th to 13th April, the programme of the International Opera and Ballet Festival in Tashkent will feature the ballet Tales of Perrault, a collaborative production by Maxim Petrov, Konstantin Khlebnikov, and Alexander Merkushev.
The librettists focused on four fairy tales by Charles Perrault: Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, and Tom Thumb. Together with a prologue and epilogue, they form a cohesive performance about how fairy tales can be both kind and cruel; how the appearance of both beauties and monsters can be deceptive; that all people are different, and no outward appearance takes away the right to rejoice, mourn, or love.
The music for the ballet was composed by three composers, who worked independently of each other, resulting in distinctly different sections—from the postmodern pastiche of Alexey Balovlenkov, to the dark horror of Dmitry Mazurov, and the repetitive affect of Nastassia Khrushcheva.
