Mahalla Urban Living, the installation first shown in Uzbekistan’s national pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale, has returned in a new form at Tashkent Design Week 2026.
The project was created by the pavilion’s curators, architects Emmanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, in response to the Biennale’s central question, “How will we live together?”
Built from bright yellow metal tubes, the installation reinterprets the traditional Tashkent courtyard house and invites visitors to see the mahalla as a model for urban living.
For Design Week, it has been reimagined as a place to meet, relax and be active.
The structure is installed in Tashkent City Park, where the Ukchi mahalla stood before the development of Tashkent City. Here, Mahalla Urban Living takes on the role of a phantom house. The exhibition is open to visitors until November 1.
