The inscription of Tashkent Modernism on the UNESCO World Heritage List is the result of the sustained efforts of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation in preparing and advancing this nomination.
In 2024, sixteen outstanding examples of Tashkent Modernist architecture were included on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List: the Zhemchug Residential Building, the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan, the Friendship of Peoples Palace, the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent State Circus, the Central Exhibition Hall, the Palace of Cinema Arts of Uzbekistan (formerly the Panoramic Cinema), the Eski Juva (Chorsu) Market, the Kosmonavtlar Metro Station, the Sun Heliocomplex, the Sharq Publishing and Printing Creative House, the Palace of Culture of Aircraft Builders, the Uzbekistan Hotel, the French Cultural Centre and the National Restoration Centre (formerly the Intourist Cultural and Information Centre), the Blue Domes Café, and the Tashkent Television Tower.
Following the preparation of the nomination dossier, ten component parts were selected for inclusion in the proposed World Heritage property, as they most closely satisfied UNESCO’s requirements concerning authenticity and integrity, while most comprehensively conveying the Outstanding Universal Value of Tashkent Modernism.
In due course, additional examples of Tashkent Modernist architecture may also be incorporated into the World Heritage property, provided that they satisfy UNESCO’s requirements and successfully complete the prescribed nomination procedures.
