Tashkent Modernist Architecture inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

At the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, the serial nomination Tashkent Modernist Architecture, comprising ten landmark sites, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is Uzbekistan’s first national inscription in 25 years and makes the country the first in Central Asia and the CIS to have its twentieth-century modernist architectural heritage recognised by UNESCO.

As part of the consistent state policy of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan aimed at preserving, studying and promoting the nation's cultural heritage at the international level, the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan is participating in the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea.

During the session, a landmark decision for Uzbekistan was adopted with the inscription of the serial nomination "Modernist Architecture of Tashkent", comprising ten landmark properties, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The inscription marks Uzbekistan's first national nomination to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the past 25 years. It also makes Uzbekistan the first country in Central Asia and the CIS, and one of only a few countries worldwide, to have its twentieth-century modernist architectural heritage represented on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Furthermore, "Modernist Architecture of Tashkent" is the youngest architectural heritage property ever inscribed on the World Heritage List, with the most recent component of the serial nomination dating from 1990.
